FormscanBy Alan Magee - PINKERTON doubled his career tally to four wins by scoring twice over fences this spring notably when just touching off Saint Roi last time in a competitive handicap at the Punchestown Festival. The bumper winner is still quite lightly raced for an eight-year-old and is an interesting recruit to the Flat. Dunvegan was a high-class chaser but didn’t show much on both outings when switched to the Flat this year, while Mordor ended a run of placed efforts over hurdles when easily landing the odds in a Sligo maiden recently. Benjis Benefit has shown promise when setting the pace on his latest two starts including when runner-up to the odds-on Williamstowndancer at Leopardstown while Toto Too is another for the shortlist.

When I saw him jumping the second last I started to enjoy it. It was straightforward, before Christmas he was bouncing but then he just went a little bit short. We worked on him and he showed today that he wasn't feeling anything. It's unbelievable now but you'd be nervous going into these races. Bryan said to himself that he'd just back off enough but keep the pressure on and he gave him a brilliant ride. We always thought a lot of him. He won two bumpers and beat a lot of winners in Punchestown, then he was so impressive when he won his maiden hurdle here. He kind of went backwards on us and he always looked like a three-mile chaser but this seems to be his trip. He ran in the Thyestes last year and didn't get the trip on the heavy ground. He went plenty far in it, enjoyed it and jumped out of it but just couldn't stay going. Thankfully we pulled him back in trip and let him rock. That's a prestigious race, I'd always been looking at these races at one time and you wouldn't think you'd ever win them. I was absolutely thrilled with Castlegrace Paddy. Davy (Russell) was delighted with him, he ran some race because that would be his first proper gallop. It was a beautiful run and I couldn't be happier. We have Dunvegan in the Queen Mother, I know you are really jumping up in class but he's done us no harm so we'll see. There is also the Dublin Racing festival, we'll move on with him now and give him the chance to compete against the big ones over the shorter trips. Things weren't working out for him early in the summer when he wasn't getting the rub of the green. We went chasing with him, that didn't work out and for a horse who jumps so well, you'd swear he never saw a fence in his life at Tramore one day. We decided to give him a little break to freshen him up and it worked. The ground is lovely, but is as quick as he wants it. Hopefully there will be another one in him before he gets a break for the winter. He is a horse that gets 2m very well and it was a burst of speed I had never felt off him before. He is not overly big but he jumps slick and likes plenty cover. He did everything right the whole way round. He came out of last week's race great. I was a disappointed he didn't win a bit easier there as it was a very ordinary contest, he struggled a bit and was maybe in front a bit long. Today when he went to the front he wandered a bit going to the last. It's great for the owners to win here, he's been a super little horse for them. I've had a couple of Group winners on the flat but that's my first Listed winner over jumps. He has been in training all year, has improved and improved. We ran him in a flat maiden at Roscommon when he was off the bridle all the way but I think the race is after improving him. Even though his dam is a half-sister to Death Duty, I was worried about his stamina because he had been free in the past. I left riding instructions up to Danny and he said there was a good enough pace and he settled well. He was off for two years but is back now. I was planning to go for a big handicap at Leopardstown but that's probably gone now. the owners (Eithne Thompson) have that breed since Shannon Spray and all the breed come from her.
