FormscanBy Alan Magee - SAMUI won a Naas bumper on debut last year and scored twice over hurdles including a valuable handicap at the Listowel Festival. The Gordon Elliott-trained gelding has switched to the Flat this year winning a 1m2f Down Royal maiden and should appreciate this stamina test. Taipan won twice last year including at this venue but has been absent for over a year since second in a Down Royal Listed race over this trip. Keithen Kennedy’s 7lb claim is a big plus and it will be interesting to see how strong the topweight is in the market, a remark that also applies to Mr Adjudicator who has been very lightly raced since winning a 1m4f Premier Handicap at the Galway Festival five years ago.

I was worried about the ground, which is yielding, but he went through it better than most. I was actually very nervous about my four runners due to the rain which came. Whatever happened he choked with Jack (Kennedy, jockey) the last day at Ballinrobe but it worked out today. . Darragh knows him well and was very good on him. I was a bit worried about the ground but Darragh said it was no problem. I could never get him into a good race with a light weight and it was the same on the Flat. He’d a proper weight on his back today and there was a good gallop which suited him. When he was dropped out in England he seemed to lose interest, and a mile and two was probably too quick for him the last day. I thought with the tight track and, if we got him to jump out and go forward, he could be in with a squeak. Kevin was very forceful on him and made up his mind in the dip. I said to him that the horse was very sluggish coming out of stalls and to try and get a position on him and he got a lovely position on him early on,. He made the horse's mind up in the dip but said he got there a little too soon. It is nice compensation (for Monday) and the horse hadn't been lucky all season until Punchestown (in May) when it came right, and it came right again at Autueil. God knows when he last had a break so we'll have a review of his season and we'll see what is coming up.
