He's very quirky, he wasn't going a yard there the whole way and it was only when he got a bit of daylight he took off. Two out I didn't think I was going to win, but as soon as you pull him out he takes off. He's a hard enough ride. He is a nice horse and has just taken time to come to himself. He has learned how to race now but doesn't do much unless he is asked and Philip (Enright, on Friary Rock) rode a lovely race there from the front and it didn't suit our lad but I think we had the better of him at the last. You could see coming up to the line he wasn't doing a whole lot in front either. He has a big engine and is exciting and likes good ground so I might put him away. He could be a Pertemps (Final) type horse in time and there's also the three mile handicap at Fairyhouse in Easter too. Not too many win three in a row. I've always loved this horse but he is mentally fragile, although is going the right way. He jumped beautifully, having been a bit novicey last year and we rode him more positively as we wanted to try something different. hopefully he is a National type horse and you'd hope he will take a step forward with more experience as it was only his fifth run over fences. He is a pure natural with an obstacle coming to him. Paul (Nicholls, previous trainer) had a few issues with him but mentally he is coming along the whole time and I was very pleased they allowed me to take him back. He travels and jumps in this deep stuff and if that can do that, it is a big benefit to them. We blow hot and cold in the yard but when we are outside the yard we are the best of friends. We changed the way of riding him and he didn't come off the bridle at Down Royal, so I was wondering what I was missing - I couldn't understand it. It's great and it went to plan thankfully. I said to Ricky 'sure you know he likes to bowl along in front and jumping is his forte so use him up'. I was a bit concerned about not getting a run into him but it went to plan. I said to the lads 'we better starting shouting' turning into the straight. I knew he stayed going. When he came in off the grass last year in September time, we were late getting him in, and I said then we'd come straight here. It was a race I always wanted to have runners in, let alone try and win it. My father rode the winner of it in 1962 so I was always trying to follow suit. I was fairly relaxed about it until they turned in and then I got a bit excited. I was enjoying it up until then as it's nice to see a horse jumping fences like that and enjoying himself. We're about three miles down the road between Ratoath and Curragha. We have some nice horses, thankfully, and will try to keep progressing as best we can. We've good help, good lads, and it's all about the staff and also my wife at home and the kids. They all support us and it's very important. Ricky is a good lad and that's two good pots he's after getting out of him now.
