An enquiry was held into the running and riding of World Trip (GB), ridden by Callum McKinnes and trained by Olly Murphy which was ridden towards the rear of the field, until making steady headway and was gaining ground on runners towards the end of the back-straight until exiting the final bend when the mare appeared to be ridden with restraint to the line to finish fifth of eleven runners, beaten by 39 lengths.
The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of World Trip (GB) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to sit midfield, get the mare settled and to creep slowly into the race.
He added that World Trip (GB) was travelling nicely in the early stages and quickened when asked towards the end of the back straight.
However, approaching the penultimate flight, she began to hang left-handed and made a noise, which he reported at Scales, which prevented him from riding more vigorously for the remainder of the contest and under the circumstances, he had achieved his best possible placing.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied that the ride had accorded with those instructions.
Having heard their evidence, the Stewards considered that although Mckinnes had reported that the mare had been hanging and had a breathing problem, she still appeared capable of running on and finishing closer having jumped the final flight, but seemed to be under restraint from the rider.
The Stewards therefore found that both rider and trainer had failed to ensure that the horse ran on its merits and that World Trip (GB) had intentionally not been asked for sufficient effort in the home straight.
The matter was referred to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority.
World Trip (GB) was suspended from running in any race for 40 days.
Ciaran Gethings reported that West Coast Glory (IRE), which was pulled up, stopped quickly; the Veterinary Officer reported that the mare had bled from the nose.
