An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Walhaan (IRE), ridden by Martin Harley and trained by Ian Williams, which was held up in the early stages of the race before making late headway to finish second, beaten by 2 lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions had been to get Walhaan (IRE) relaxed and take his time in order to get the gelding to finish its race.
He added that he had been happy with his position in the early stages and Walhaan (IRE) had been relaxed, after which he had intended to follow the favourite Tiger Crusade (FR).
He further added that he had become concerned entering the last couple of furlongs when Tiger Crusade (FR) was no longer travelling well, whereupon he opted to maintain his run in the hope that a gap would open but this had resulted in Walhaan (IRE) being denied a clear run, a fact he had reported at Scales.
He added that he then had to switch right-handed for a run and was happy with how the gelding had finished its race off and Walhaan (IRE) had been well-held by the winner.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions.
Their explanations were noted.
The winner, River Nymph (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Newmarket on 20 June 2020 where the colt finished eighth of ten, beaten by 10 lengths.
Clive Cox could offer no explanation for the colt’s improved form other than River Nymph (GB) had perhaps appreciated the return to a less undulating track.
River Nymph (GB) was routine tested.
The performance of Campari (GB), which started second favourite and finished last of the twelve runners, beaten by 14 lengths, was considered.
The representative of Roger Charlton could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance.
Following the race, Sean Levey reported that Ziggle Pops (GB), unplaced, hung left-handed.
