B. Hayes, rider of Notice To Close (GB) trained by Seamus Neville, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his was unable to get his feet into his irons on the approach to the first hurdle and pulled up
S.W. Flanagan, rider of Imperial Reprise trained by C.A.McBratney, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount finished lame
The Stewards enquired into the circumstances surrounding the pulling up of Notice To Close(GB), trained by Seamus Neville and ridden by B. Hayes before the first hurdle. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and from Mr. P.F. Graffin, I.H.R.B. Starter. B. Hayes stated that his mount was a difficult ride and that he took his feet out of the irons in an attempt to help him to settle. He stated that he got his right foot into the iron, but failed to get his left foot back in before the race was started. He added, that when his mount jumped off his right foot slipped out and he had no option but to pull up, as felt he could not race without irons. He accepted that the starter had given him every chance and the error was a combination of his fault and that of a difficult mount. Having considered all the evidence, the Stewards accepted the explanations offered and advised B. Hayes to be more accurate when furnishing a report at scales in future under the provisions of Rule 213
