Permission was given for Our Boy Sam (GB) to wear a hood in the Parade Ring only.
Leaving the stalls Marilla (IRE), unplaced, jumped slightly right-handed at the same time as Crenelle (GB), placed second, jumped slightly left-handed which resulted in the pair making contact on several occasions and becoming unbalanced in the early stages, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved nor had it improved the placing of Crenelle (GB).
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference near the 1-furlong marker involving the winner, War Of Words (IRE), ridden by Stefano Cherchi and Crenelle (GB), placed third, ridden by Martin Harley.
After hearing evidence from both riders and viewing recordings of the incident, it was established that War Of Words (IRE) had drifted left-handed into the whip for some distance and gone across the running of Crenelle (GB), causing Harley to be badly checked in his run at a crucial stage of the race, losing significant ground and momentum in the process, before Crenelle (GB) had then rallied strongly thereafter, to be beaten a rapidly diminishing 1/2 length and short head margin.
The Stewards were satisfied that had the interference not occurred, Crenelle (GB) would have finished in front of War Of Words (IRE) and the placings were revised accordingly as follows: First – WENDELL’S LAD, Second – Crenelle (GB), Third – War Of Words (IRE) and Fourth – Franklin William (GB).
Cherchi was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to drift left-handed without sufficient or timely correction, when insufficiently clear of Crenelle (GB), causing Harley to check and lose his rightful running.
Following the race, Daniel Tudhope reported that Combat Style (IRE), unplaced, hung left in the home straight; Ross Coakley reported that WENDELL’S LAD, hung left under pressure; Martin Harley reported that Crenelle (GB), was denied a clear run approximately 1 furlong out and Stefano Cherchi reported that War Of Words (IRE) hung left in the home straight.
