FormscanBy John O'Riordan - Despite being raised 12lb for an easy Punchestown win in May, WESTERN MODEL should be capable of following up. With the seven-length runner-up easily landing a competitive handicap at Listowel on his next start and the third just beaten a head at Bellewstown, the form has a strong look. Paul Nolan's five-year-old seems to appreciate a decent surface so the less rain that falls, the better his chances. Pat Doyle's Safran Et Bleu won a handicap over course and distance last time. Although subsequently raised 6lb, his riders claim brings him right back into contention. Another recent course and distance winner Reserve Judgement has more on his plate here but can't be ruled out given he is proven around this tight track.

They are a great bunch of lads and to be honest with you, they have been waiting a while. The horse is good in this grade and he has been knocking on the door, he deserved to get one. It was great that it happened today and Keith gave him a great ride. He handled the ground really well, wants good ground. He's in his bracket. I was very disappointed the last day here when he cut out but we scoped him and he was full of muck. It was clay and went down his throat and that's why we put a cross noseband on today to give him a bit of a chance. I felt if he produced his Fairyhouse run he'd win but he had to produce that. Ben rode him last time and said the ground wasn't the problem, he's versatile enough and will go on nicer ground as well. I'd say the key to him is the (three-miles) trip. It has been a year (since his last winner) but it was always going to come. This horse thinks a lot about his races and was going home after he was due to run at Punchestown but he reprieved himself. He followed that run up today and, more than anything, we found a jockey to ride him. At Punchestown I asked him (Mullins) to make the running if he could, but told him to make up his own mind and to go to Plan A,B,C,D,E or F or through the alphabet if he wanted. He came in and told me he couldn't fault the horse but a man with confidence can ride like that. I gave him no instructions today. I won a Kerry National for his owner (Donal O'Connor) with Native Performance when he had a 1-2 in the race but Willie Mullins trained the runner-up.
