An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Hawridge Storm (IRE), ridden by Sean Levey, which forfeited many lengths at the start when very reluctant to jump out of the stalls, before being tenderly handled throughout the remaining stages of the race, to finish fourteenth of fifteen, beaten by 46¼ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post- race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that he was conscious that Hawridge Storm (IRE) may be reluctant to jump off, having ridden the gelding on its previous start.
He added that once the stalls opened Hawridge Storm (IRE) had virtually refused to race, a fact that he had reported at Scales, and felt he had lost all chance.
He further added that in his opinion there was nothing to gain by attempting to roust the gelding along in order to make up the lost ground, with the going riding on the slow side, in the expectation that Hawridge Storm (IRE) would have no more to give in the later stages.
His explanation was noted.
