An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Dr Rio (FR), ridden by Tony Hamilton and trained by John Mackie, which was tenderly handled in the home straight before running on to finish seventh, beaten 4¾ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Hamilton stated his instructions were to drop Dr Rio (FR) in, get the gelding settled and creep into the race.
He added that Dr Rio (FR) has been a very difficult ride in its previous races and had switched off and settled better today.
He further stated that the gelding was denied a clear run turning into the home straight and as Dr Rio (FR) has never won beyond 1m 1½f, he left his run as late as possible; he then became short of room 1½ furlongs out and again on the run to the line.
The trainer stated that the ride accorded with the instructions, and he was satisfied with the ride given as the gelding had been difficult to train at home.
Their explanations were noted.
The performance of Going Underground (GB), which started favourite and finished unplaced, was considered.
James Fanshawe’s representative reported that the gelding ran flat and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Going Underground (GB) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Qawamees (IRE), placed third, lost its right fore shoe and Frederick Larson reported that Financial Conduct (IRE), unplaced, jumped awkwardly from the stalls.
Callum Rodriquez reported that Ooh La Lah (GB), unplaced, raced awkwardly throughout and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly failed to reveal any abnormalities.
