An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Mabre (IRE), ridden by Tom Queally and trained by David Evans, which dwelt on jumping from the stalls and was settled towards the rear of the field, before making good headway in the home straight to stay on and finish fifth of ten runners, beaten 2¼ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post- race examination of Mabre (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Queally stated that his instructions were to be positive from the gates and race on the pace, with the option to make the running if need be, however the gelding missed the break and failed to muster early speed, which saw Mabre (IRE) get further back than intended.
Queally added that he felt the early pace was even, but when the leaders quickened up leaving the back straight Mabre (IRE) was out-paced and displayed a tendency to lug notably right-handed which restricted his ability to place the gelding under full pressure.
It was for this reason he was reluctant to commit the gelding to making a wide run around the outside of an inexperienced apprentice aboard CASINA DE NOTTE (IRE).
He further added that eventually Mabre (IRE) came back on the bridle approaching the home turn, before the gelding had then been disappointed for a clear run between CASINA DE NOTTE (IRE) and Must Be An Angel (IRE) inside 1½ furlongs out, which forced him to switch right-handed.
Queally further explained that Mabre (IRE) was baulked by Must Be An Angel (IRE) shifting right inside him near the 1 furlong marker and the gelding had thereafter continued to lug right-handed, forcing him to use the whip down the shoulder on one occasion for correction before again being intimidated by CASINA DE NOTTE (IRE) edging right-handed towards him over the final half furlong.
He considered the combination of a left-handed track and the tight nature of Wolverhampton were not playing to Mabre (IRE)'s strengths and therefore recommended to the Trainer that he try running the gelding at Kempton where it has won in the past and is also a right-handed track.
His explanations were noted.
Approaching 2 furlongs out, a free-running Rogue Tide (GB), placed second, shifted right-handed to avoid the heels of a weakening Zeyzoun (FR), unplaced, at the same time as Amadeus Grey (IRE), placed sixth, edged marginally left-handed, causing the winner, Harlow (GB), to be crowded for racing room over several strides, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Following the race, Richard Kingscote reported that Rectory Road (GB), placed third, was slowly away and Hollie Doyle reported that Rogue Tide (GB), placed second, hung left throughout.
