We went a nice gallop. He had the experience coming into the race. He had some really solid form behind him. I'd say they were surprised he hadn't won his Beginners(chase) until now. We had been thinking of going for the Galway Plate so he would have wanted to do that in this grade and had finished fourth in a Grade 1 three runs ago. The Plate was in my head all summer but when he was beaten in Tipperary, I had a chat with Martin (Cooney) and we decided to stay in calmer waters. Rachael gave him a super ride and he jumped super. He is now still a novice for the season so we'll exploit that and we're hoping he will mix it in graded company during the winter. It was brilliant the way it worked out. A huge thanks to Tadhg Moynihan, I picked him out at the sales and rang him and asked if he would buy him. He said Eric if you want him and I said 'I don't want to go home without him'. So I bought him but he paid for him. He paid for himself today. To win one of these handicaps is great. He was well handicapped if we could rekindle him, he spent two years doing nothing in England, whatever went wrong there. We changed his routine and we were always very kind to him. We brought him a few different places to work and we never took him off the bridle. We trained him like he was a real good horse and he always worked against horses that he could beat just to try and mentally get him back to where he was. He was a real good horse. He was only beaten seven-and-a-quarter lengths in a Gold Cup. I met Tadhg in Listowel one year, he was a great friend of Sean Currans', and we've been great friends ever since. He was high class; he was a Grade 1 winner. He was very unlucky all winter with the ground being very soft, he was struggling with his wind on real soft ground,. said Elliott. We went hunter chasing with him and had a great plan to qualify him for the Foxhunters this year but didn't get to qualify him, everything went wrong. For him to come back and win for the lads here is great because they've been patient with him. He wasn't going to have too many more chances which just goes to show if you don't give up. He's a lovely horse, it's great for Pioneer and great for Danny Gilligan, a local man, who was touched off in a couple of races during the week. I thought when he hit the front a half furlong down 'I don't know if he'll get home with his wind'. I'd say it just did catch him for the last half furlong. He's been a horse of a lifetime for me, I've had him since he was a four-year-old. He jumped very well and I'm happy with him. I was very happy with his work recently. He ran in Gowran a while back and the ground was too wet and he just couldn't get through the ground. The one thing I was happy with that day was that he settled. He has a tendency to get very lit up and very keen and hang. He's quirky. I was happy that he settled away in Gowran and didn't hang. I thought on his best form he'd have a chance. He won a maiden hurdle up here and he won a bumper (in Cork), so he's not a bad horse. I'm delighted for James. I've always loved this horse but he is mentally fragile, although is going the right way. He jumped beautifully, having been a bit novicey last year and we rode him more positively as we wanted to try something different. hopefully he is a National type horse and you'd hope he will take a step forward with more experience as it was only his fifth run over fences. He is a pure natural with an obstacle coming to him. Paul (Nicholls, previous trainer) had a few issues with him but mentally he is coming along the whole time and I was very pleased they allowed me to take him back. That was some exhibition. She had a lovely run in Limerick, but she takes a bit of time between her races as she's so hard on herself. We went back to Cork after she was second here and it was too soon. She jumps and stays, that's her forte. She won a maiden hurdle by a similar distance (25 lengths) and to win a beginners' chase by 26 lengths is some going. She's going to get better and she'll get more black-type over fences by the same she's finished. The plan was to try and get the beginners' out of the way and she's got that done. She seems to be at home on that ground, but she's not slow either. For one that travels so well on the heavy ground here, she finds the deep sand at home hard work. I put in a carpet gallop this year at home and it's after transforming her, she zips up it.
