FormscanBy Gary Carson - MAN O WORK is interesting here on his first start in handicap company on the Flat. The Workforce gelding didn't run too badly when staying on in a competitive contest over timber at Galway on his last outing and had run well in a Tipperary maiden on the level back in May. He doesn't look badly treated off a mark of 79 now. Lot of Joy weakened tamely enough when favourite for the big amateur handicap at Galway but had run really well at the Curragh previously and has to be respected. The admirable Taipan won well on his return at Ballybrit but may be vulnerable to a better handicapped rival.

I'm delighted, he hasn't run for over a year and it's great to get him back. Those conditions races are great for him. We were thinking of putting him in the amateur handicap but when he was qualified for this we decided to wait for now. I've had him ready to run for about the last six weeks but every time the ground came up too quick for him so I took him out. He just needs a little bit of an ease in the ground now in his old age. He deserved that as he had been running well on the flat. He is a fantastic horse, runs over hurdles and on the flat and he'll win again on the flat,. I was in a panic about the November Handicap because he had to have three flat runs for it and if the entries aren't closed, could run in it. After his fall in Leopardstown (at the Dublin Racing Festival in February) his confidence level has come right back through the roof. Things didn’t go to plan today, they often don’t in these big fields, and we had to not panic and go to plan B but it’s worked out well. Plan A was to be handier. I gave him a squeeze and he winged the second last and the last. He’s an amazing little horse. He’s still a bit novicey and is still only a five-year-old. This winter went horribly for him, the ground went against him and things didn't work out. We pulled the plug, he had a lovely run when finishing second in a flat race in Tramore and this race was the plan. He likes Listowel and finished second in the Lartigue Hurdle last year but last Monday I was down here and we were debating whether to run, with all the rain that fell. We walked the track this morning and with fresh ground, decided to take our chance. He missed the break and we were hoping to be closer to the pace, but plan B came into operation and Cian didn't panic. Trainers make plans but jockeys have to be allowed use plan B and they are the ones who win races. He was brilliant, is based with Jessica Harrington and rides out for me in the afternoon. we had a lovely bunch of two-year-olds last year but we said they were big backward three-year-olds (of the future) and he is a big big horse who is only starting to fill his frame. He is learning on the job. When Shane got him out and into the open he didn't know what to do but he really ground it out and was good and game at the line. We'll build on this, get him home and see how he comes out of this but stepping up to 1m6f will be no problem as he is a gorgeous big stayer in the making.
