The performance of Peerless Percy (IRE), which started favourite and finished unplaced, was considered.
Michael Dods' explanation that the gelding did not face the kickback once headed on this occasion, was noted.
Peerless Percy (IRE) was routine tested.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Beaufort (IRE), ridden by Thomas Greatrex and trained by Warren Greatrex, which after jumping awkwardly and being very slowly away, was allowed to become further detached throughout, with the rider making no visible effort to improve his position, before finishing last of 11 runners, beaten 134¾ lengths.
The rider and the trainer's representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race, whilst the trainer was interviewed by telephone; the Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities, however a subsequent endoscopic examination revealed Beaufort (IRE) had blood and mucus in its trachea.
The rider stated that he had no specific instructions, however they wanted Beaufort (IRE) to find a nice rhythm and making the running was an option.
Greatrex explained that Beaufort (IRE) missed the start badly losing a significant amount of ground, a fact he had reported at scales, and in his opinion had lost any chance of being competitive thereafter as a result.
Greatrex further stated that at no point in the race did he place the gelding under any form of pressure to improve, and again reiterated his position that there was no point in trying to recover ground from such an uncompetitive position.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and gave the Stewards a detailed history of Beaufort (IRE)'s racing manners which included a high, awkward head carriage and tendency to race keenly.
Greatrex was suspended for 7 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure Beaufort (IRE) was given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing, in that after being very slowly away he had failed to ride the gelding in such a way that he could be seen to ask the gelding for any form of effort or encouragement to get competitive or improve its position at any stage of the race.
Following the race, Josephine Gordon reported that Silken Moonlight (GB), unplaced, was never travelling.
