Kihavah (GB) wore earplugs throughout the race.
The Stewards noted that James Bowen, the rider of the winner, Peejaybee (FR), rode a finish with only his right rein from approximately 1 furlong out, due to the buckle having come undone.
The reins were inspected after the race and as they were found to be in a serviceable condition, no further action was taken.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Kihavah (GB), ridden by Kevin Brogan and trained by Adrian Keatley, which after being restrained at the start, raced towards the rear of the field before being asked for a sustained effort from approaching the back straight bend until appearing to be somewhat considerately handled at times in the final 3½ furlongs and staying on evenly to finish eighth of thirteen, beaten by 24¼ lengths.
Brogan was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Brogan stated that as Kihavah (GB) had a history of being keen both at home and on its only run at Bangor-On-Dee, his instructions had been to drop the gelding out and get settled, finding a nice rhythm and to obtain the best possible placing.
He indicated that the early pace was solid and this enabled him to switch Kihavah (GB) off in a rearwards position and the gelding had jumped relatively well throughout.
He added that Kihavah (GB) had hung slightly left-handed on the bend entering the back straight and twice had to be niggled along down the back to maintain its position upsides Motahassen (IRE).
He further explained that despite being ridden along hands and heels for some distance from entering the back straight bend, Kihavah (GB) had failed to quicken up and improve its position before the gelding, in his opinion, had blown up from approaching the second last hurdle.
From this point with the gelding tiring, he was focussed on keeping Kihavah (GB) balanced, particularly after it had landed awkwardly jumping the second last, losing ground and momentum in the process.
Brogan also added that he felt the gelding had only stayed on one-paced down the straight despite his urgings, failing to improve its position relative to Kinondo Kwetu (GB), which finished directly in front of him, in seventh place.
Brogan confirmed that he would be reporting to the trainer that Kihavah (GB) would be better suited by a sounder surface and may appreciate being stepped up in trip to 2½ miles.
His explanation was noted.
