Permission was given for Lady Chuffnell (IRE) to be mounted in the chute.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Midnight Jewel (GB), ridden by Jonathan Burke and trained by Charlie Longsdon, which raced prominently in the early stages before being shuffled back after passing the winning post on the first occasion, and after making a mistake at the sixth hurdle dropped to the rear of the field and was pulled up prior to the third-last hurdle.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The rider stated his instructions had been to jump off, be positive and do his best from there.
He further stated that he had been instructed to keep the gelding wide and give Midnight Jewel (GB) a sight of the obstacles.
He added that having raced prominently and wide early he had been shuffled back in the field and thereafter jumped poorly and also had a tendency to hang left-handed.
He continued that after making jumping mistakes and whilst losing ground on the field he believed it was in the best interests of Midnight Jewel (GB) to pull the gelding up and in his opinion Midnight Jewel (GB) had been unsuited by the fast ground, which was officially described as Good to Firm, and had further been outpaced on the drop down in trip to 2 miles 1½ furlongs on this occasion.
He further added that the gelding may be suited by the application of some sort of headgear, a more galloping track and a smaller field.
His explanation was noted.
Following the race, Bryan Carver reported that Espressino (GB), which was pulled up, made a bad mistake at the fourth hurdle and was never travelling thereafter.
The Veterinary Officer reported that Vlannon (GB), which was pulled up, was lame on its left-fore and Nachi Falls (GB), which was pulled up, had bled from the nose.
