An enquiry was held, adjourned from Salisbury on 29 May 2021, into the use of the whip by Hector Crouch, the rider of the winner, Fleurman (IRE).
After being interviewed and shown recordings of the race, Crouch was suspended for 2 days for using his whip above the permitted level from approximately 2½ furlongs out.
The apparent improvement in form of the winner, Fleurman (IRE), which had never previously been placed, was considered.
Ralph Beckett’s explanation that the gelding was suited by a step up in trip to 1 mile 4 furlongs and appreciated the going, which was officially described as Good to Soft, Good in places, was noted and the gelding was routine tested.
Approaching the 3 furlong marker, Gavin (GB), placed eighth, was hanging in despite the rider’s best efforts and carried the tiring Mount Olympus (GB), unplaced, right-handed off its intended line and as a result Nibras Gold (IRE), placed sixth, who had improved up the inside of Mount Olympus (GB) was forced to shift sharply left to avoid the inside running rail shortly after the intersection.
As a result of this, Mount Olympus (GB) became unbalanced and stumbled, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that there was no riding offence it had not improved the placing of Gavin (GB).
Following the race, Kieran O’Neill reported that Gavin (GB), placed eighth, hung right.
Hollie Doyle reported that Mount Olympus (GB) stopped quickly after being hampered approaching the 3 furlong marker; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination revealed the gelding had been struck into on its right hind.
