An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Elkstone (GB), ridden by Sean Bowen and trained by Caroline Bailey, which raced in mid division and appeared to be tenderly ridden in the home straight to finish fourth, beaten 24 lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Bowen stated his instructions were to drop in and get Elkstone (GB) settled as the gelding can be keen, particularly when returning from a lengthy absence.
He added that Elkstone (GB) raced keenly in the early stages, and as a result, had to sit in mid division in order to get the gelding to settle.
He further added that he gave Elkstone (GB) time to fill its lungs in the back straight, and that entering the home straight the gelding began to hang right, which prevented him from riding Elkstone (GB) more vigorously and he felt it prudent to hold the gelding together to the finish line.
The trainer stated that the ride accorded with her instructions and she was satisfied with the ride given.
