The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Callum Shepherd, the rider of Gavlar (GB), had cantered back to the chute when his horse had been withdrawn on Veterinary Advice at the start and he had been instructed by the Starters to go no faster than a trot.
They interviewed Shepherd, the Veterinary Surgeon, and the Starters.
Having heard their evidence the Stewards accepted Shepherd’s explanation that he had started to trot, as instructed, but Gavlar (GB), who in his opinion can be quite excitable, broke into a canter without being asked.
He added that he did not want to excite the gelding any further by restraining Gavlar (GB), so he made the decision to allow the gelding to continue to canter at a steady pace.
