Permission was given for First Excel (GB) to go early to post.
Leaving the stalls, Six Til Twelve (IRE), placed third, jumped left, carrying Chiavari (IRE), placed fourth, onto Le Manege Enchante (IRE), placed second, which after being slowly into stride was then hampered, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Six Til Twelve (IRE).
An enquiry was held to consider two instances of interference approaching the first bend.
The first incident involving Newgate Angel (GB), placed seventh, ridden by Raul Da Silva; Reshaan (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Cam Hardie and the winner, Robsdelight (IRE), ridden by Ben Curtis, was found to be accidental as Newgate Angel (GB) lugged left before being corrected, crowding Reshaan (IRE) onto Robsdelight (IRE), which was tightened across the heels of Champagne Mondays (GB), placed eighth.
In the second incident shortly afterwards, Newgate Angel (GB) interfered with Reshaan (IRE), which in turn interfered with Robsdelight (IRE).
Da Silva was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to edge left towards the rail without sufficient correction and when insufficiently clear, causing Reshaan (IRE) to be steadied when crowded for some distance, which resulted in Robsdelight (IRE) being buffeted for room.
Approaching 3 furlongs out, Newgate Angel (GB), placed seventh, lugged right at the same time as Six Til Twelve (IRE), placed third, hung left causing Reshaan (IRE), placed fifth, to be inconvenienced when tightened for room, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Approaching 2 furlongs out, Newgate Angel (GB), placed seventh, hung quickly left-handed away from the whip, hampering Chiavari (IRE), placed fourth, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Chiavari (IRE), ridden by Robert Havlin, and trained by Alexandra Dunn, which raced in rear throughout before staying on under a hands and heels ride in the home straight to finish fourth, beaten 1 length.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Handicapper offered observations and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination revealed the mare was lame on its left fore.
The rider stated his instructions were to drop in, as the mare is always ridden, and let Chiavari (IRE) find its feet as the mare was dropping back in trip from 1m.
He added that Chiavari (IRE) can be keen, but was pleased with the way the mare had settled in the early stages and was travelling well, when he was interrupted in his run approaching 2f out.
Despite that, he felt Chiavari (IRE) still had every chance in the closing stages, but that the mare seemed to come back at him inside the final furlong and thought Chiavari (IRE) might benefit from headgear going forward.
However, upon hearing that the mare was lame post-race, he felt that this could have been a contributing factor and might have accounted for Chiavari (IRE)’s head coming back.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with the ride.
He added that they were still trying to find the key to the mare and thought Chiavari (IRE) might be suited to the fibresand and having performed well, he intimated that the mare would return to Southwell and could consider a step back up in trip.
Their explanations were noted.
