He's only 16, and had a fall at Wexford on only his third ride and he was very lucky thank God. But it didn't affect him at all. He's a big fella and with the 10lb claim he will be able to claim off 9st5lb. A P O'Brien, trainer
The Stewards interviewed D.W. O'Connor, rider of Vallar (USA), concerning his use of the whip in closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned in the presence of J. F. Levins, trainer and master of D. W. O'Connor. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Regulation 10. 3. (d), in that he had continued to hit his mount after his chance of winning or being placed had clearly gone and having considered his record cautioned him. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Hughs Flyer, trained by Kieran P. Cotter, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be lame post race. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Emiest Rose, ridden by M.D. Jones, and trained by C.F. Swan. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. M.D. Jones, stated that his instructions were to settle his mount in around sixth or seventh, get her relaxed and to do the best he could. He added that misjudged the early pace of the race and left himself too far out the back. C.F. Swan confirmed the instructions given and expressed his dissatisfaction with the ride. He outlined the inexperience of this apprentice and felt on the day he had got it all wrong. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Emiest Rose was found to be post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanation offered in relation to the trainer, and they found the rider was in breach of Rule 212 in that he had failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures through out the race to ensure his mount was given a full opportunity to win or obtain its best possible placing. Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, they suspended him for 7 race days and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. .
