Permission was given for Avon Light (GB) to wear a red hood to post.
Bluebottle Blue (GB), trained by William Haggas, was declared a non-runner in this race at 10:18 am on 28 January 2024, due to preferring the filly to run at Southwell on 30 January 2024 prior to the sales.
Haggas was fined £140 as he had made the filly a non-runner before 9am of the day of racing without an acceptable reason.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings following interference in the home straight involving the winner, Inverlochy (FR), ridden by Harry Davies and Avon Light (GB), placed second, ridden by Lewis Edmunds.
After hearing evidence from both riders and viewing recordings of the incident, it was established that Inverlochy (FR) had lugged right-handed approaching the final furlong and briefly moved Avon Light (GB) off its intended line before again edging right-handed passing the 1 furlong marker moving Avon Light (GB) off its intended line.
Thereafter, throughout much of the final furlong it was considered that Avon Light (GB) was hanging right-handed independently away from Inverlochy (FR) which continued to drift slightly right-handed on the run to the line.
Taking into account where the actual interference occurred and after giving regard to the minimal nature of it, in terms of no contact between the runners or apparent loss of momentum suffered by Avon Light (GB), the Stewards were unable be satisfied that had the interference not occurred Avon Light (GB) would have finished in front of Inverlochy (FR) and ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
Davies was cautioned for careless riding as he had failed to take sufficient steps to correct his mount from drifting right-handed, which resulted in Avon Light (GB) being intimidated off its intended racing line near the 1 furlong marker.
Following the race, Greg Cheyne reported that Clipsham Gold (IRE), placed fifth, was slowly away; Hollie Doyle reported that Waleyfa (GB), unplaced, hung right-handed and the Veterinary Officer reported that the filly had lost a right-hind shoe.
