An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Janus (IRE), ridden by Mitchell Bastyan and trained by Milton Harris, which was held up at the rear of the field and appeared to allow the first three runners to get away from them, before being asked for an effort in the closing stages, whereupon the gelding had stayed on strongly to finish fourth, beaten by 10¾ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of Janus (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions had been to ride the gelding to obtain the best possible placing, bearing in mind that Janus (IRE) had been running on the flat.
He added that the gelding had initially settled well at the rear of the field but had run in snatches and been green over its hurdles in the early stages, before warming to its task as the race progressed.
He further added that he had held onto Janus (IRE) as he was concerned about the trip for the gelding and was mindful that Janus (IRE) may need the run having not run over hurdles for 18 months, but in the circumstances had been delighted with the performance.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions, before adding that Bastyan could perhaps have been a bit more forceful from turning into the home straight.
Bastyan was suspended for 10 days for failing to ride his mount in such a way that he could be seen to ask for real or substantial effort to obtain the best possible placing.
Lawyersgunsn'money (GB), which was later pulled up, jumped sharply left-handed at the first hurdle, causing Presenting Yeats (IRE) to fall which in turn brought down Le Crunch (FR), but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Lawyersgunsn'money (GB), which was pulled up approaching the second-last hurdle, had bled from the nose.
