Birkie Girl (GB) ran yesterday, 3 January 2022, at Lingfield and finished third.
Having been examined by the Veterinary Officer, the filly was deemed fit to race.
U A E Fifty (IRE), trained by Alice Haynes, ran with the wrong number cloth.
The Stewards interviewed Kieran O’Neill, Alice Haynes, the Clerk of the Scales and a member of racecourse staff.
After hearing their evidence Haynes was cautioned.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference inside the final furlong when The Ormer Gatherer (GB), placed second, ridden by George Downing, interfered with Homemade Andrea (IRE), placed third, ridden by Darragh Keenan, who in turn interfered with Birkie Girl (GB), placed fourth, ridden by Sophie Jones, who in turn interfered with U A E Fifty (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Kieran O’Neill.
Being a 7lb claimer, Jones was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
The Stewards considered that the interference had improved The Ormer Gatherer (GB)’s placing as the contact made with Homemade Andrea (IRE), which led to the filly becoming unbalanced on several occasions, resulted in Homemade Andrea (IRE) losing ground and momentum that was greater than the head between them at the line.
The Stewards revised the placings as follows: First: Twistaline (GB), Second: Homemade Andrea (IRE), Third: The Ormer Gatherer (GB), Fourth: Birkie Girl (GB).
Downing was suspended for 4 days for careless riding as he continued to use his whip in his right hand despite his mount drifting left-handed causing Homemade Andrea (IRE) to be bumped on several occasions and resulting in the filly becoming unbalanced and carrying Birkie Girl (GB) off its intended line resulting in O’Neill having to take a check on U A E Fifty (IRE).
Following the race, Hollie Doyle reported that Splendid Isolation (IRE), unplaced, stopped quickly and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
