Permission was given for Dandy Belle (IRE) to go early to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Isle of Wolves (GB), ridden by Robert Dunne and trained by Jim Boyle, which was held up in the race, making smooth head way and appeared to be tenderly handled in the home straight finishing third of eleven, beaten by 8 lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Handicapper offered observations and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination, shortly after the race, revealed that the gelding had lost its left fore shoe and was slightly lame on its right hind.
The rider stated that his instructions were to jump from the middle of the group, to get the gelding to settle and to do his best to achieve the best possible placing on the trying ground.
He added that Isle of Wolves (GB) made several mistakes throughout the race, in particular a bad mistake at the first hurdle and as a result lost several lengths off the leader.
He continued that when asked for an effort turning into the home straight, the gelding did respond but was weakening, so he felt it prudent to hold the gelding together to ensure ISLE OF WOVLES jumped the final hurdle safely and finished the race.
The trainer stated that he was happy with the ride which accorded with the instructions given.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, James Davies reported that John Betjeman (GB), placed second, hung left-handed and Tom Cannon reported that Peckinpah (IRE), placed fourth, whipped around as the start was effected losing several lengths.
