Neff (GER), trained by Gary Moore, did not enter the Parade Ring due to the girth originally used to saddle the gelding having to be replaced.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Olympic Honour (FR), ridden by Conor Ring and trained by Evan Williams, which was settled towards the rear of the field in the early stages and progressed into midfield on the second circuit before making a mistake at the third-last hurdle, whereupon the gelding appeared to be considerately handled from turning into the home straight to finish eighth, beaten by 26½ lengths.
The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions had been to settle Olympic Honour (FR) towards the back of the field and get the gelding to finish the contest as well as possible.
He further stated that being mindful of the testing conditions he purposefully took Olympic Honour (FR) wide early on to race on what he believed would be better ground and was happy with his early position with the gelding travelling well.
He continued; that shortly after passing the winning post for the second time, the winner, Gustavian (IRE) had moved off his inside and when asked to make progress Olympic Honour (FR) was unable to hold his position and had started to struggle.
He added that the gelding had started to come back onto the bridle going down the hill in the back straight, before making a bad mistake at the third-last hurdle which knocked the wind out of Olympic Honour (FR) and resulted in the gelding getting very tired.
He further added that he gave Olympic Honour (FR) a hands and heels ride and a few slaps down the shoulder in the home straight in order to keep the gelding going forward and continued to push Olympic Honour (FR) all the way to the line, but the gelding was tiring and in his opinion could not have finished any closer.
The representative of the trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Bryony Frost reported that Hollywood Ken (IRE), unplaced, ran too freely.
Sheena West reported that Bard Of Brittany (GB), placed sixth, was never travelling and appeared to be unsuited by not wearing cheekpieces which the gelding had worn on its previous five runs; Bard Of Brittany (GB) was routine tested.
