It took the judged a while to split them here with PRINCE ERIK just getting the verdict by the narrowest of margins.
KEMPES had looked set for victory when kicking clear three furlongs out but came under pressure two furlongs out and was soon strongly pressed. The pair were locked together in the final furlong and it was Prince Erik who just had his nose in front for the camera.
Prince Erik showed no ill affects from his trip to Cheltenham, where he had been running a fine race in the Fred Winter until a mistake two out. He stuck to his task well when coming under pressure three furlongs out. There was nothing to choose between the pair on ratings with the 98-rated Kempes getting 6lb off his 104-rated rival. Kempes was a solid favourite, however, (4/5 to 8/11) while Prince Erik was easy to back (9/4 to 5/2).
NORA CHRISSIE was held up and stayed on into fourth a furlong out. She kept on into third in the final furlong without troubling the front two.
CHARLEMAGNE, ridden in fifth turning in, kept on at the one pace while CLOONE RIVER kept on from the back without posing a threat.
