At the end of the day he's going to be a chaser so anything he does over hurdles is a bonus. Mrs John Harrington, trainer
P.E. Corbett, rider of Howwouldsheno, trained by George Stewart, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran keen early on, ran one paced and may need further in the future. N.P. Madden, rider of Spring Forward, trained by Edward P.Harty, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran free and green early on, reached at some of the hurdles and stayed on one paced in the closing stages. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Scenic Star, ridden by J.B. Kane, and trained by Gavin Cromwell. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. J.B. Kane, stated that his mount is a temperamental type that had ran very free previously, and in an attempt to settle his mount, he had gone to the start early. He said his instructions were to ride his mount at the rear and get settled into a jumping rhythm as soon as possible and to do the best he could. He said that after the second hurdle, a loose horse had caused his mount considerable distraction and as a result of this, he had become further detached than he had wished for. He stated that when his mount did manage to pass the loose horse, he gained ground and although he did pass tired horses, he felt it had come far too late in the race and he rode his mount in an educational manner thereafter. Gavin Cromwell, confirmed the instructions given and expressed his dissatisfaction with the ride. He confirmed that his charge is a temperamental type and may be of limited ability, but felt that the rider had allowed himself to get too far detached from the field and as a result of this, had never fully got into the race. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that Scenic Star was found to be post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards accepted the trainers explanation. They did, however, find that J.B. Kane was in breach of Rule 212, in that he had failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race, to ensure that his horse was given a full opportunity to win, or to obtain the best possible placing. Having considered his previous record, the Stewards suspended him for seven race days and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. Mrs. T.K. Cooper, Acting Steward, absented herself from this enquiry.
