Derwent delivers for Finale Stakes winner
River Derwent has been coming down the weights although we thought he might never win! . He had been running better recently - he was fifth a couple of weeks ago and wasn't really lasting (over a mile), but the seven seemed to suit him well. Adam is very, very good, is very strong for an apprentice and rides with his head. We will have three or four to run for the winter. It has been a good year and a winner here makes the long journey (from Gowran) worthwhile.
Martin and Kearney combine for Dundalk win
he got outstayed last week and was probably was in better form today. He broke, travelled and picked up really well. He loves the surface and is in a good place at the minute. He'll stay going, but I'm sure he'll be out of that (47-65) grade now. I think seven (furlongs) just gives him a chance to be travelling better. Much the same the last day, but they kept going well that day. They went really hard today, I think, and he got home well, so delighted. I'm delighted for Jack - he's a really nice rider, but a very good worker as well. I'm sure Ger (Lyons, retained trainer) would agree with that. He has always had a good work ethic and he seems to learn every time he goes out there. He's a big lad and I hope the weight isn't a problem for him, but he works hard at it. The future is bright. I've always tried to identify guys that are good value for their claim and there are a lot of good kids.
My Goodness, McGuinness - winner scores dramatically
that wasn't the plan! We were going to drop her in and cover her up, but fair play to the young fella as he didn't panic. He got her into a nice rhythm, didn't fight her and didn't panic. She is inexperienced but stuck at it well. That is Oisin's first ride for me - Paddy Harnett was to ride but got caught in traffic so he certainly won't be too pleased. Fair play to Oisin though, he gave her a great ride. she might even come back here for a claimer in a couple of weeks and is entered up in the mares' sale in a couple of weeks time so will be sold at some stage.
Champion Keane collects on Never Cry Never
I was talking to Fozzy beforehand and he said Never Cry Never lengthens more than he quickens, and said to be good and positive riding him. We had something to aim at (leader Reinforce) at the bottom of the straight and when we went about it, to be fair he picked up the whole way to the line. He was probably getting a bit lonely but, if anything had come to him, I think he would have picked up again.
Morning Approach scores for McCreery and Lee
the race the last day, over 1m2f, didn't suit as they just went no pace but today's race suited as they went a good gallop and the horse that went off in front (Humanitarian) set them all at it. She had targets to go at and galloped right out to the line. She enjoyed that today and Billy knows her. Actually when it came up the other day for jockeys, Billy just said to Kevin (O'Ryan, agent) 'tell them I'm riding' so that was enough for me. I was a bit unlucky earlier on with Dream Ticket, she'll come up here again.
Apprentice Ryan adds another winner to Friday's treble
James is signed on to me and has been with me from when he was at school. I couldn't wait to get him signed on and put him up on everything more or less straight away. He's incredibly good through a race - if he is not where you want him to be, there is a reason for it. He rides on feel.
Mullins and Heffernan reel in the years with Dundalk winner
we let him roll in Cork and he just got caught on the line. Then we held onto him in Navan and I don't know whether the horse didn't like the ground or he didn't like being held up. Today showed us what we had seen in Cork as we were devastated in Navan. That was a good performance there to carry 10 stone and make all and we'll come back here with him again.
