Baldomero (IRE), trained by Michael Appelby ran yesterday, 26 December 2022, at Wolverhampton and was placed second.
Having been examined by the Veterinary Officer, the gelding was deemed fit to race.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after two instances of interference in the home straight involving Baldomero (IRE), placed second, ridden by Jason Watson and Excel Power (IRE), placed third, ridden by Luke Morris.
It was established that in the first incident shortly after entering the home straight, Baldomero (IRE) shifted right-handed intimidating Excel Power (IRE) off its intended line.
In the second incident near the 1/2 furlong marker Baldomero (IRE) moved right-handed initially carrying Excel Power (IRE) at least two horse widths off its intended line, before ultimately giving that runner a bump which unbalanced Excel Power (IRE).
After the final incident occurred Excel Power (IRE) made ground all the way to the line on Baldomero (IRE) from approximately a neck down, to be beaten by a diminishing short head margin.
The Stewards were satisfied that had the interference not occurred and Excel Power (IRE) were afforded an unimpeded run in the home straight, it would have finished in front of Baldomero (IRE) and revised the placings as follows: First: Positive (GB), Second: Excel Power (IRE), Third: Baldomero (IRE), Fourth: Intuitive (IRE).
In the first incident Watson was cautioned for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to drift right-handed without sufficient correction thereby causing minor interference to Morris.
In the second incident Watson was suspended for 2 days for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift right-handed for an extended period under a left-hand drive without correction causing further interference to Excel Power (IRE).
