The Stewards received a report from Mr. P.L. Malone, Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that S.W. Flanagan, rider of Mary Frances, weighed in at 1.1 lbs overweight. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that S.W. Flanagan was in breach of Rule 231 and they therefore cautioned him concerning his future responsibilities in this regard. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Princess Mahler, ridden by A. McCurtin, and trained by John J. Walsh. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. A. McCurtin, stated that his instructions were to settle the mare in a good position towards the front and to try get her jumping and settled. He added that his charge was tired and unbalanced in the latter stages. John J. Walsh, confirmed the instructions but would not say that he was satisfied with the ride as he felt that the rider should have used the whip. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Princess Mahler was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule 212a(ii) and having considered his clean record in this regard, suspended him for five race days and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. The Stewards noted the trainer's explanation.
