The other day in Tramore he was too keen and never got time to settle. He's in again at Punchestown on Thursday; he's after being busy but if he comes out of this fresh, he might see another day out. He's in the November sales and the Mees (owners) always send two or three to the sales and he's one they picked out. He's one I wouldn't like to lose but they always replace them. A.P. Thornton, rider of The Black Devil trained by Miss Claire Simpson, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount hung badly to the right from the fourth hurdle. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Sultana Belle, trained by S.R.B. Crawford, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal. The Stewards received a report from Mr I. Hamilton , Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that S.A. Shortall , rider of Bank The Bucks , weighed in at 1.6 lbs overweight. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that he had weighed out at .9lbs over the base weight and had a cup of water. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that S.A. Shortall was in breach of Rule 231 and they therefore suspended him for 1 raceday having taken his previous record into consideration. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Bashful Beauty, ridden by D.E. Mullins, and trained by Norman Lee. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. D.E. Mullins, stated that he was given specific instructions not to ask his mount at the hurdles, leave him on the bridle as he goes better ridden this way, ride him with his heels, keep the bit up in his mouth and a hold of his head for as long as possible as he does not go for a drive. He added that he rode exactly as instructed but in a fast early pace he was unable to lie up, missed some hurdles, squeezed his mount from the fourth last hurdle and slapped him early in the straight but on getting no response he left him alone in the closing stages. He said that he told the trainer post race that his mount was dead in running and never travelled. Norman Lee agreed with the account of the instructions as stated by the rider but in his opinion he felt that he had failed to ride his charge with determination and in so doing had failed to obtain his best possible placing. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Bashful Beauty was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards considered that the trainer had made a serious allegation and consequently referred the matter to the Referrals Committee. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Sultana Belle, ridden by Mr S. Crawford, and trained by S.R.B Crawford. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. The trainer stated that this filly was returning from a lay off and the rider was instructed to drop in and to take his time with a view to finishing as well as possible. He added that he had reservations about the quick ground but felt that the race was run at a fast early pace which left his charge well off the pace and she was further compromised by jumping very high and losing ground. In the circumstance he was satisfied with the ride and recalled that her two victories were in the U.K at Hexham and Sedgefield. He added that she has been consistent but her future plans were undecided. The rider stated that agreed with the instructions as relayed and added that in a very fast run race he became detached as a result of the quick ground, fast pace and slow jumping. He felt that he passed tired horses in the closing stages and he kept her going to the finish where she took fourth place. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Sultana Belle was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations of both persons and took no further action.
