Mr Josiey Wales lays down the law in Cork
Power steers Master Artist to maiden win
after his last run in Gowran he had something wrong with his knee and had to get an operation. He came back and was very keen the last day I rode him at Thurles and then didn't really put up a show but was a lot better today. He switched off today which was the main thing.
Goulane Chosen mighty off the front in Cork
He got sick of running on bad ground so we said we'd wait for better ground and he loved it out there in front today. We'll keep him to better ground now. He was rated 146 at one stage and is a proper horse and is mighty for a small yard like us. It might give my father a bit of a kick now as he got a knockout before Christmas so that will give him a boost. It's great for his owner/breeder Mary O'Donnell too.
Save Us Avis a first track winner for Flood
I only have a hunter chase license but am doing the trainers' course this month and that's my first racecourse winner. She is very small and I'm delighted as I thought she'd run well but didn't think she'd win. We have been waiting a while for this mares' only hunters chase and the people (Mulvihill family) that own her, bred her also. We'll have a few more to run with no point to points and we have 20 in training, mainly point to pointers which we hope to sell. We have a few more which we are better off getting handicapped on the track rather than running in Open point to points.
Wrong Direction brings up first brace for Spillane
Things went against him all along as he had mucus in his lungs and couldn't shift it but we managed to get it out and it paid off thank God. He didn't run until he was an eight year old and won by 20 lengths on his first start. He had decent form and hopefully he can keep on that road now. We might go for a handicap chase with him now. That's our first double on the track.
Aintree absentee wins Jack Tyner Memorial Chase
Trevor (Hemmings) loves Aintree and this horse was sent to me to take him to Aintree for the Foxhunters Chase next weekend but wasn't able to qualify with the point to points being called off. He needed to win and be placed (in point to points) to qualify, and I thought he had qualified in Boulta as he was in front everywhere bar the line, but there have been no point to points since. To win this for the third time in four years is fantastic and it wasn't on last year. He'll go to Punchestown and Killarney now.
Murphys Letthetruthbeknown in Cork
The better ground was a big help today and she is a nice well-bred mare. She had a nice first run and I think Jamie (Codd, jockey then) said things actually didn't go well for her. She hadn't run in so long the last day and the ground was so heavy. That's my second winner on the track, I work for Denis and have about 40 point-to-point winners ridden. The yard is going well at the minute.
Cobblers Dream delights Aherne in Cork
That was a lovely effort. We haven't him too long but had him in a schooling bumper at Boulta and was fairly impressive in it and that was fairly impressive there. He's not an overly big horse and he skipped off the ground and everything went a dream. The main objective is to sell him now and he is a lovely horse to jump. He does things lovely and has a great attitude.
