Shine rides first track winner on 200/1 Unklipped
Heather (Buckle, owner) came over from England today to see her run. The last day we were very disappointed, she just put up no performance. We just thought she needed to be ridden more positively,. Obviously, it was a surprise. I told Heather all winter that we have a mare that's well capable, but things just need to click. Her pedigree isn't bad. To be fair, Cal gave her a great ride and that's what she needed. The handicapper can't be too hard on her as the highest-rated horse in the race was 104. Hopefully, he won't crucify us. We're only getting to her now and I hope she'll improve. She'll jump a fence in time.
Ranger Billy 'seems to have turned the corner'
It's great for Gerry, the man who owns him, who is from Galway,. Over the winter he wasn't going on the heavier ground. We changed a few things at home and started training him outside, he seems to have turned the corner a bit now. He was running well enough in races but just wasn't getting home, over shorter trips. It seems that he's in his comfort zone over three miles. He seems to be well handicapped and should get another one of those over the summer. He's a good fun horse for the summer. Michael (O'Sullivan) gave him a great ride, sure he was the best jockey in the race and that's no disrespect to any other jockey. He got him jumping and into a great rhythm. It's great to get a win out of him. The second horse ran well there, but he seemed to be holding him the whole way. He's a fine big horse and he'll jump a fence. Obviously he wants that summer ground and he wants a trip. It took us a while to find that out but we did anyway.
Dorans River delights Rothwell in Kilbeggan
I'm thrilled, he's a lovely old horse,. We gave him a break when I got him as he had a few little things. I get a great amount of pleasure out of seeing an old horse like that running well. Native Jack won the cross-country in Cheltenham for me when he was 12 and he went back at 14, having not run for a year, and was second. It's lovely to see an old horse like that sound and enjoying being in a race. He's been running really well, we sort of let him improve himself. He was third the last day and I thought he ran a cracker, it's great to see him winning. We'll run him away on summer ground and he might get retired come the winter.
Doyen gifted victory in three-miler
You can't beat a bit of luck!. I didn't know what was going to happen today with that fella as he would have a mind of his own. I was just delighted to see him travelling and the better ground would be a big thing for him. I shouldn't have run him at Easter (pulled up at Fairyhouse), that was a poor decision on my behalf. We have him back going well and this was a lovely pot. In fairness to Kilbeggan they put on good prize-money and it's brilliant to be able to get a result here. We'll keep tipping away with him.
Space Tourist finishes in a different galaxy to her rivals
It's great for Sean (Cleary-Farrell, jockey). He's a real hard worker and a good rider. He's full-time in our yard and deserves all the opportunities he gets. She's a good mare and we might look to Galway now and see if we can get black-type with her. The owners (Yorkshire Rose Syndicate) got up at 3.30am this morning to come over from Leeds, so they'll be happy. She's improving all the time and loves that good ground. She's a bit out to her left, so she might even be better going the other direction but at the moment she's winning this way, so we'll go where we can.
Mullins and O'Sullivan double up with Uncle Phil
This track suited him much better, a flatter track. Wexford was a bit too stiff for him, he likes to get on with it. He jumps fantastic and he's going to be a much better chaser than he was a hurdler. He's starting to settle a bit better as well. We'll look for a novice chase somewhere and I think flatter tracks are going to suit him better.
King times it just right on Pakens Rock
He's won four times in Galway, but I don't think he'll get into the Plate and he might even be tight to get into the Blazers. I've two horses so I'm happy to have a winner any time.
Minella Mate game in the bumper
He's tough, he's a Shantou and they keep battling,. He gave him a great ride and he stuck at it. He had good runs and we always said he was a good horse. He got a knocked a little when we schooled him and we just had to take our time with him. He had a good run in Gowran the first day behind a Grade 1 horse. I think he'll be grand. He has a little mark on him, but he's grand. If he's not sold sure it's grand to get a day out with one too. We loaded up whoever was around in the hotel at 4.30am and came on here. The horses are going well thank God.
