FormscanBy Tom Weekes - Paul Townend has set the cat among pigeons in riding STATE MAN in preference to odds-on antepost favourite Lossiemouth, in a fascinating match-up. The Champion Hurdler had an uncharacteristic blow-out in a tearaway race here during Christmas and while his effort was tame and no excuse emerged, it is significant that Townend stays loyal. This course had previously been his den and in November had encouragingly chased home top prospect Brighterdaysahead in the Morgiana. Lossiemouth was put in her place by Constitution Hill during Christmas, having herself been caught flat-footed by the early pace. Defeating third-placed Burdett Road isn’t outstanding form though and, who knows, 2m4f might indeed suit her better. Winter Fog can jog past Fils d’Oudairies for third.
