We generated James Moffatt’s Highland Lodge. The 11-year-old comes in as high as 40/1 but is said to have a “cracking chance”. This season marks his return after winning the Becher Chase in 2015.

So, it looks like we’re choosing one of the outsiders but who’s favourite for the race?

Who is in the running is not yet certain and the list of the 40 runners will be confirmed on Thursday, it’s highly expected that favourites Vieux Lion Rouge and Definitely Red will be running, however, early favourite Minella Rocco will not run with trainer Jonjo O’Neill taking an extended view on the 7-year-old’s future.

The ultimate favourite happens to be Vieux Lion Rouge at a narrow 10/1. The 8-year-old boasts a rating of 155 and is trained by David Pipe. He came seventh in last year’s running but heads into this weekend’s duel in great stead with some very good form behind him having won the Becher Chase in December. He also won the Grand National Trial at Haydock in February so is definitely worth a flutter.

Definitely Red is next up at 14/1. Also 8-years-old, Brian Ellison’s man is a Grade Three winner over fences after winning the Rowland Meyrick Chase on Boxing Day.

He definitely staked his claim for the Grand National and showed he meant serious business after overpowering The Last Sumuri and Grimthorpe Chase by some distance.

Blacklion also comes in at 14/1. The 8-year-old is trained by Nigel Twiston Davies and came second to Vieux Lion Rogue in February’s trial at Haydock, losing out by just lengths. He won the RSA Chase last March and is well worth considering.
