John Flavin is eyeing a trip to Cheltenham for Midnight Our Fred who ran a stormer in second in the Paddy Power Steeplechase at Leopardstown over Christmas before being outgunned in the closing stages by Perceval Legallois.

The trainer alluded to the eight-year-old gelding's decent record around Prestbury Park as he outlined a campaign involving the Kim Muir in March and a return to the Killarney National.

Flavin said: "He did everything bar win (in Leopardstown).

"The aim at the minute will be to go to the Kim Muir in Cheltenham. He was supposed to run in it last year and he was just a couple of pounds wrong, so hopefully he gets into it this year.

"I'd say I would go straight there, he runs well fresh. He had a hard enough race the last day, so hopefully we will go straight there. He has been second three times in Cheltenham.

"I'd definitely be thinking of the Killarney National after that. Even though he has won in Gowran (in October), he is a lot better going left-handed. We would be aiming for that direction anyway.

"He is slightly better on better ground."

Midnight Our Fred was third in the Killarney National last May.

He was runner-up in three handicap chases at Cheltenham in October and December 2023, and in April last year.
