Karamoja put a disappointing effort at the Limerick Christmas Festival behind her when justifying favouritism in the Surehaul Race Day Mares Maiden Hurdle which had a tragic aftermath at Clonmel.

Trained by Willie Mullins for Gigginstown House Stud, the daughter of Masked Marvel challenged early in the straight and drew clear along with Whatsupnellie from the penultimate flight where Arctic Piper fell when in third place.

The 6/4 market leader got on top on the run-in to beat Whatsupnellie, who suffered a fatal injury after stumbling just after the line, by a length and a half.

There was a yawning gap of 35 lengths back to Neon Diamond in third.

Townend said, "We put a line through her last run so today's run would mean that she came on from here (in early December). I think with more racing she will settle as she is still quite saucy today. Once she settles down she'll be fine.

"You'd hope she will progress away and she will be learning as she goes."
