Substitute gained an "overdue" win when storming clear from the top of the hill to run out an easy winner of the first division of the Kinnegad Handicap Hurdle at Kilbeggan.
Andrew Leigh, recording a double on the card, made a bold bid for home after the fourth last and his mount soon had the others struggling.
He kept up the gallop to post an impressive 25-length winning margin over Woodvilla Last
4/1 favourite St Killian's Run never travelled and finished a moderate sixth.
"He's well overdue that win. He's a half-brother to Roberto Goldback and we thought he would win a bumper a long time ago," said trainer John Carr.
"He's a big horse and might just be coming to himself now. The cheekpieces made a difference and Andrew made his mind up at the top of the hill. We rode him differently today.
"We'll pick out something similar and see what the handicapper does. He might even go for a chase."
