Lambourn-based Archie Watson trained his second winner in Ireland when Glen Shiel landed the Group Three Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh under Oisin Orr.
Orr’s brother Conor was on the mark at Downpatrick earlier on Dollys Destination and this family double wasn’t particularly expected pre-race with Glen Shiel going off a 12/1 shot.
The 108-rated victor was officially behind the likes of even money favourite Millisle (114, didn’t come up to expectations in 6th) but he showed a good attitude to touch off the filly, Sonaiyla close home, for a neck win.
It was just a head and a short head then to the third and fourth placers, Forever In Dreams and Speak In Colours
Watson was also on the scoresheet for Hambleton Racing XXXVI with Maystar in a Listed event under Hollie Doyle over at Deauville.
“He's very tough, ideally I didn't want to be in behind them but when I did get him out and get him rolling he's come home well,” said Orr.
“He stays a bit further and when I got him out and in the clear he hit the hill well.
“Thanks to connections for letting me on him.”
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined Millisle, trained by Mrs John Harrington, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.
S. Foley, rider of Millisle trained by Mrs John Harrington, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount did not move correctly throughout.
