Danny Mullins completed the notable feat of riding a winner at all 26 Irish racecourses when successful aboard Fu’s Island in the Bloomfield House Hotel Mares Hurdle at Kilbeggan.
He gave the Paddy Meany owned and trained mare a patient ride, and the tactics worked out a treat as she quickened clear in the straight.
The 7/1 chance headed Jaime Sommers off the home turn but finished to such effect that she had nine lengths to spare at the line over Western Home who stayed on to deny Jaime Sommers (who reportedly showed signs of coming in season before the race) the runner-up spot.
The 7/4 favourite Cotton Jenny was soundly beaten in fifth, and was later found to be clinically abnormal on examination.
Mullins said, “That’s great to complete a winner at every Irish racetrack. I’ve been trying here for a good while and have had plenty of seconds and thirds.
“I made a fairly conscious move to sit down the back as I felt they were going plenty quick enough. It’s a bit further home here than a lot of people think, and thankfully it has worked out well.”
