Ruby Walsh took the riding honours at this additional fixture when partnering an inspired double aboard Quintus and Goldenhalo.
The former champion was hard at work in the back straight on Quintus in the Enniscorthy Handicap Hurdle, but the Edward O'Grady-trained topweight dug deep to snatch victory by a short-head from Nijinsky Dancer in the final stride. 'He wasn't winning out of turn, and I would say that a winter stay in part owner Tony Barrett's farm helped to refresh him. He will mix it between hurdles and fences,' said O'Grady.
Walsh moved onto the ten winner mark for the season when Goldenhalo justified good support (2/1 to 13/8) in the Gorey Beginners Chase. Frances Crowley's charge struck the front two out, and needed a strong drive to repel the challenge of Theseus by two lengths.
Darren Joyce was concussed and taken to Wexford Hospital for observation after the 7lb claimer's mount Jiran ran out through the wing of the final flight when still in contention in the New Ross Maiden Hurdle. Victory here went to the Charlie Swan trained and ridden African Waters, who went on to beat Northern Mill by two and a half lengths.
Ballinrobe permit-holder Michael Flannery was on the mark in division one of the Rosslare Maiden Hurdle where Cochis Run led after three out under Larry Hurley before holding on by a diminishing half a length from well-backed favourite Palace Storm.
No Toulon survived a stewards enquiry in division two, edging left under Barry Cash on the run-in when beating the reluctant Active Member by a length and a half.
Cluain Rua recorded his second course win this month when taking the Carnmore Handicap Chase in nice style under Conor O'Dwyer. Ger Cusack's charge stretched clear after two out to beat Annaghmore Gale by a comfortable three lengths. 'I have nothing in particular in mind, but will try to find something similar for him,' said Cusack.
