Cold temperatures and the possibility of snow are major worries ahead of this weekend’s racing action with the Grade 1 card at Naas on Sunday already subject to an inspection.

A severe drop in temperatures with nighttime levels as low as -4C resulted in a Status Yellow temperature alert overnight by Met Eireann and rain, sleet or possibly snow is forecast from tomorrow.

Naas Clerk of the Course Brendan Sheridan reported this morning: “The ground at present is soft and we have a grass frost but it hasn’t got into the ground.

“The forecast is for temperatures to pick up a little bit today and the sun is to come out.

“Met Eireann is predicting temperatures to get down to -2C or -3C tonight. There is no frost tomorrow night but there is rain or snow moving through tomorrow night into Sunday.

“It is uncertain whether it will be rain, snow or sleet but in light of the forecast we will have an inspection on Sunday morning at 7.30.

“At the moment the track is raceable.”

The Grade 1 Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle is the highlight with a strong supporting card including the Grade 2 Racing Post Novice Chase.

There is also racing at Cork tomorrow where the going is currently described as soft.
