Review NAVAN 16TH DEC

Noel Meade's view that Jazz Messenger would get two and a half miles was vindicated in thrilling style in the Tara Hurdle.

Paul Carberry's mount cruised up to close on the front-running Sweet Kiln, and when asked to go by her on the run-in, he pulled out what was required to win by 3/4L.

Adamant Approach ran with great credit to be 3rd, 7L back, with Sweet Kiln's stable-companion, Earth Magic 1L further in arrears in fourth.

Meade suggested, 'we always thought he might get two and a half as he got a mile and a half on the flat and might have even got two if we'd asked him.

'He jumped fantastic today and I honestly don't know where he will go next, Kempton or Leopardstown maybe. Harchibald definitely goes to Kempton.'

Carberry completed a double in the winners of one hurdle on Majestic Concorde, who easily justified odds of 2/7 (from 2/5) for Dermot Weld.

Tom Doyle, rider of Sweet Kiln, gained compensation half-an-hour later on Trafford Lad for Eamonn 'Dusty' Sheehy.

There were two fallers in this five runner Grade 1 Barry & Sandra Kelly Memorial Novice Hurdle, Glencove Marina still in with every chance when departing two out.

Trafford Lad headed the pace-setting favourite, Gem Daly from the last, and stayed on dourly to score by 1 1/4L.

Sheehy was delighted, saying, 'I said all along that he was a right horse. He is 17 hands and is still improving.

'Naas for the Slaney Hurdle in January would be his most likely target with the Ballymore Properties 2m 5f Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham a long term goal.'

'Lar Butler, my head man, is in the Butler Family Syndicate, who own him. Trafford Lad will make a fantastic chaser in time.'

Tom Doyle gained a second winner on the day on King Vic for Jim Culloty in the 2m 6f h'cap hurdle.

Third market-choice, Tex Morgan and Huntmaster (25/1) were in a dispute for the lead when both came down independently two out in the beginners chase.

Glencove Marina (5/4 fav) looked held in third at that stage, but he took his opportunity under Davy Condon, going on to beat Marhaba Million.

Successful trainer Willie Mullins said, 'we got our Christmas present a little early. He could go for the Durkan New Homes Novice Chase at Leopardstown next.'

Of course Mullins also had a double at Cork courtesy of the David Casey ridden pair of Our Ben and Pomme Tiepy.

Sadly Tex Morgan broke his shoulder and had to be put-down. Meanwhile Johnee Joblot comfortably took the h'cap chase for John Coleman and Alan Crowe.

Those that waited for the bumper were treated to a terrific performance from Corskeagh Royale, who bolted in by 8L.

The Beneficial gelding, bringing up a double for Noel Meade (he also had one at Cork), scorched clear of Lord Over to justify 13/8 favouritism.

Meade was surprised by the Nina Carberry-ridden 4yo saying, 'we honestly did not think he was that good. He has to go into the mix as a Cheltenham bumper horse now though.'
