Review NAVAN 2ND APR

Jockey Barry Geraghty recorded a double at Navan today although his second win, in the Laurence McLoughlin Builders Handicap Chase, was more than a little fortunate.

Geraghty was booked for second spot on Tom Taaffe's Solar System with Tony McCoy, on The Boys In Green, two lengths in front on the run to the final fence.

However, a desperate blunder from The Boys In Green here saw a brilliant recovery from McCoy although the horse himself was brought to a standstill, leaving Solar System in front.

At the line Solar System held a length and a half lead over The Moyne Machine, with The Boys In Green unable to recover from his mistake, finishing last of the five finishers.

Geraghty later confirmed how lucky his mount had been but joked 'the fences are all there to be jumped!'

Geraghty had earlier ridden Tasman to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Novice Hurdle for Dermot Weld.

The son of Definite Article raced wide on the better ground before progressing to lead before the second last flight.

An untidy jump at the last failed to stop Tasman who kept on well in the run-in for a neck win over Far From Trouble (4/5 favourite), under Tony McCoy.

McCoy did partner a winner during the afternoon, steering Christy Roche's Adarma to an effortless win in the Senator Novice Chase.

The 1/3 favourite had no difficulty seeing off the challenge of 15l runner-up San Angelo, whose blunders over the last two fences sealed his fate.

Roche later reported 'she had had a few soft touches but will go to the Punchestown Festival now where there won't be any easy races.'

Co Monaghan's greatest export, trainer Oliver Brady, was again in full voice following Maralan's win in the opening Hill Of Tara Novice Hurdle.

Cheers of 'Ballybeagh for the cup of tae' were heard in the winner's enclosure with Brady also reporting 'Maralan was taking on older horses last time out and didn't run as bad as a few people thought.'

He added 'the horse doesn't go as well right handed and we were very disappointed he didn't get a run at Cheltenham as we though he'd win the four year old handicap hurdle.'

Trainer Colm Murphy saddled former point to point winner Dusty Doolan to win the NI Children's Hospice Handicap Hurdle under Robert Power.

Afterwards Murphy reported 'he had been a little frustrating on the track but showed the benefit of his debut handicap hurdle run at Thurles recently.'

Regarding stable-star Brave Inca, Murphy commented 'he's in great form and runs in the Aintree Hurdle next Saturday.'

The winners' bumper was won by Wheresben, who ran out an impressive 11l winner for trainer Seamus Fahey and provided the Fahey's son James with a second win from only a handful of rides.

The feature event on the card, the Grade 3 An Uaimh Chase, was run as the final race with game veteran Native Upmanship making all for an easy win over long odds-on favourite Rathgar Beau, in a tactical battle.
