Review KILLARNEY 14TH MAY

David Casey shone at Killarney on Monday night with two power-packed rides to notch a double.

Ballycullen Boy gained an overdue win in the opening maiden hurdle when emerging the right side of a terrific duel with Irish Invader.

Maureen Danagher's charge had filled the runner-up spot on his last four starts and looked booked for second again as Irish Invader edged ahead after the last.

Casey refused to accept defeat, however, and forced his mount to the front on the line to land the spoils.

'He loves the good ground and we'll probably go chasing with him now,' said Danagher.

Adrian Joyce took a nasty looking fall from Sketch On The Page and was stood down for the day after suffering a kick to the face.

On The Other Hand also got his head in front close home when beating Lotomore Lad by half a length in the handicap chase.

Casey produced the Charlie Swan-trained gelding to challenge before the last but he had to battle to get past the 20/1 shot, who stuck to his guns gamely.

Farmer Brown (8/13f) justified his short odds in the Laurels Bar Hurdle but had to work for his victory.

Davy Russell's mount blundered when challenging three out but led at the next and ran on well to score by a length-and-a-quarter from Mill House Girl.

'We'll probably give him a two week break. He may run on the Flat - I would love to win a maiden with him,' said trainer Pat Hughes afterwards.

Odds-on punters didn't fare so well in the fillies maiden as 4/9f In A Rush was collared in the final furlong by Provider.

Tommy Stack's filly took a while to get into top gear but flew home in the closing stages to score by a-length-and-three-quarters under Billy Lee.

'She grew a lot last year and has taken time to come to herself,' said trainer's son Fozzy Stack. 'She'll go for a fillies handicap over 7f or a mile.'

Cru gave Declan McDonogh a nasty fall against the rail before the race and the champion will have to pass the doctor before tomorrows action.

Another Jayjay produced a game front-running performance to claim the Killarney Vintners Handicap under Rory Cleary.

Owner Julie O'Kane flew over from Birmingham to see her charge land the spoils and trainer Michael Halford said: 'Rory have him a very good ride. He was very free last year but has learned to settle now.'

Constantine wasn't helped by a loose horse in the closing stages of the beginners chase but was manoeuvred well by Ken Whelan to score by four lengths from Dreux.

Gentleman Jeff held the challenge of Family Focus to claim the concluding apprentice handicap for Shane Gorey and Dermot Weld.
