The John McConnell horses have really turned a corner in recent weeks and Third Avenue was a 14/1 winner for him at his local track when taking the second division of the 1m6f maiden handicap.

The Born To Sea gelding was never far from the pace and led over a furlong out under Billy Lee. He stayed on to account for Hattie Amarin (4/1) by three quarters of a length with the 7/2 favourite Forgetthesurprise running on into third, a further length and a quarter away.

Out of luck with the well-backed Blankiedoodie earlier on the card, this was a happier outcome for McConnell who said: “We thought he’d run very well the last day (twelfth at Fairyhouse) but he was disappointing and we don’t know why. The ground was really quick that day and Bellewstown have done a brilliant job with the ground — it’s genuine good ground and very safe.

“I also put on a tongue strap and cheekpieces for the first time today. He got a beautiful ride from Billy, very uncomplicated.

“We always thought he had a day or two in him and he’s a half-brother to (Beresford Stakes runner-up and three-time hurdles winner) Orgilgo Bay. That’s why we have him.

“He’s a galloper and stayed the trip well. He’ll probably make a hurdler and is still a big, raw baby - mentally and physically.

“I’m delighted to get his head in front and hopefully he’ll improve again.”
