Multiple point to point winner Inchiquin High gained a deserved maiden bumper win in the concluding Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Mares Bumper at Wexford today, scoring a real family success for the Kiely family, with trainer Paul Kiely registering his first winner.
Inchiquin High races in the colours of Kiely’s father Richard while the handler’s brother Richie Kiely, formerly based with Champion Trainer Willie Mullins, steered the daughter of Mountain High to another win, having won on each of her four previous point to point successes.
The mare had finished second on her last three bumper starts, latterly being beaten by just a neck and short-head, and following today’s win Cappagh, Co Waterford based Paul Kiely stated “that’s my first winner on the track although I've had a few point-to-point winners and she won three point-to-point's in a row for us this year.
"Things are starting to go alright for us, we just put in a new gallop and hopefully it'll pay off. I'm based in Dungarvan and we have three or four in at the moment.
"It's a family run thing; my brother Richie rides, my other brother Tom is a farrier, and my father Richard owns this one. I'm no relation to (trainer) John Kiely but do a bit of work for him in the mornings alright."
He added "she was unlucky the last few runs and deserved to pick up a race. I'm not sure where she will go next; she is eligible for a bonus so she might go for a maiden hurdle. Hopefully we can have a lot more fun with her."
