Owner Brendan Keogh recently enjoyed another success with his star greyhound King Turbo in the Olympic at Hove and today on the horse racing front he saw his Midnight Stroll (12s into 10s) land the www.corkracecourse.ie Handicap Hurdle.
A gamble here on Chatham Street Lad (6s into 3/1 favourite) was thwarted by the sweet-travelling Midnight Stroll who prevailed by half a length. Mary Frances (33/1) ran gallantly and she ended up three lengths off the front pair in third.
It was nine lengths then to the fourth placer Allez Kal
Midnight Stroll is trained by Robert Tyner and was ridden by Philip Enright.
"The plan was to go over fences and he was entered at Naas tomorrow because we couldn't run him with the ground and we came here as an alternative for suitable ground. He is a big strong heavy horse and I was afraid to risk him in Naas even though there was only three in the race. It's a different climate up there," said Tyner.
"He has a lot of class but is hard to settle and tanks a bit and needs a bit of minding. He's a buzzy type of horse and we tried a hood on him today and it helped as well.
"We'll go back over fences now but it is a very short season now."
C.J. Orr, rider of Kellyiscool trained by C.Byrnes, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his saddle slipped and pulled up thereafter.
The Stewards interviewed C. Brassil, rider of Ball D'Arc (FR), concerning his use of the whip during this race.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that C. Brassil was in breach of Regulation 10.3(f) in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency.
Having taken his previous record into consideration, the Stewards cautioned C. Brassil.
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined Ball D'Arc (FR), trained by Gordon Elliott, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be lame behind post race.
