Hurley suspended as Irish still lead series

Larry Hurley was in trouble with the local stewards ´down under´ after the latest leg of the Australia v Ireland Jump Jockeys Challenge.

Bruce McLean and Craig Durden took the first two places for the home team in what was curiously a Flat mile handicap at Bendigo, with Paddy Flood finishing third and Larry Hurley (fourth) and John Allen (fifth) next home. Robert Power trailed on a 40/1 outsider.

The race carried only ´half points´ for the series, and the Irish managed to retain their advantage leading by 59 points to 49.

Flat racing in Australia though is a little bit different to racing at home as Larry Hurley discovered to his cost. He bumped John Allen´s mount in the first furlong and got a seven-day ban.

´No way in Ireland would you get suspended for anything like that, jockeys bumping in a jumps race, there wouldn´t be a word,´ said a disgruntled Hurley.

Eight visits to the stewards´ room resulted in a suspension from 12 midnight on Saturday until 12 midnight on Saturday, 21st August, with the ban also applying to Ireland. But it doesn´t prevent him from riding at Moe today and Moonee Valley on Saturday.
